Intermediary

Intermediary began with two ideas, that of the tension of opposites, in conjunction with technology – specifically technologies of the mind, of the modern world and the questions of morality and ethics in technology.  What evolved in this painting was the question of whether we are awake or sleeping through our lives.  “This who know what they are doing will control the technology”…. words I heard in a dream many years ago, come to mind again in this painting.  Buddhist spiritual teaching advises us to know what we are doing – to be aware of the mind and all its little (and big) tricks.  The trick that comes to question in this painting is the one where our mind is putting us to sleep and tricking up into thinking we are awake.

The images that arose are a meditating Buddha and a sleeping boy.  The boy is engulfed in battles, between seemingly opposite forces of nature and the world.
